Largest Gold Mine in Canada Raided
Police have participated in a raid on the largest gold mine in Canada today. Provincial police from Quebec seized documents at the Canadian Malartic mine, which is owned by the Montreal-based Osisko Mining Corp. They were there to protect and serve representatives of the provincial Environment ministry.
A spokeswoman for Environment Minister Daniel Breton says the raid was prompted by allegations that Osisko broke the terms of the deal allowing the company to exploit the mine. Department officials demanded documents linked to drilling and blasting from April 2011 to October 2012.
Gold deposits, which saw renewed exploration in 2008-2009, are estimated at about 9 million ounces. The mine is the largest ever open pot gold mine.
This is on the heels of Canadian authorities investigating Kitco for falsifying tax data,
