The precious metals refiner Johnson Matthey, notoriously close to the Rothschild clan, has continued production of 1 oz. bullion products. Generally not minted by Johnson Matthey today, these bars are lusted after by collectors, often fetching 30% premiums. The company has gravitated towards medical supplies in recent history; that is, products they can make more money on.

But, nevertheless, the company seems to be active in minting 100 oz. bars regularly, but not so much these 1 oz. bars. In the last week, North American bullion dealers Gainesville Coins, Liberty Coin & Precious Metals, Provident Metals, Tulving, & APMEX have listed the bar, selling them for approximately $1.50 to $2.00 over spot. Perhaps this could, temporarily, collapse the 1 oz Johnson Matthey “Art” bar market on eBay.

$1.50 over spot for something that one would have to report seems steep. Nevertheless, Johnson Matthey bars are long sought after by collector’s.

“$1.50 over spot for something that one would have to report seems steep…”

$1.50 over spot is most definitely *not* steep. That is an unbelievable price.
